Are you wondering how to get rid of your old cooker oven?

You’re not alone! Did you know every year, about 9.4 million tons of electronic waste is sent to the garbage in the U.S.? Well, the most surprising thing is that only 12.5% of said waste is recycled.

Naturally, such a huge amount of waste poses a significant threat to the environment because the majority of ovens contain non-biodegradable pollutants.

Whether you choose to donate to charity, sell on eBay, recycle, or rent a dumpster, making the right choice is critical. Read on for a detailed insight into how, where, and the best ways to dispose of cooker ovens safely!

How to Dispose of Your Cooker Oven

Hiring a junk removal service will save you a journey to get rid of your old oven yourself

If your old cooker oven is still working and you feel generous, I find that donating it to charity is a great option. Think of daycare facilities, shelters, private schools, or missions. You’ll get a tax reduction and prevent a usable appliance from going to waste.

Depending on the condition and quality of your cooker oven, you can get a tax deduction of $20 to $250.

Hire a Junk Removal Service

Hiring a junk removal service is the best option to get rid of your old stove if you don’t want to go through the hassle of searching for a charity organization. In my experience, the company will charge you based on the space your items take on their truck. Nonetheless, ensure you have the junk ready before pickup.

Sell the Oven

Bulky household kitchen appliances such as cooker ovens are heavy and difficult to transport. You can’t leave kitchen appliances in the trash bin in front of your house for garbage collection. Unless the store you purchased the oven picks it up, you have to find a better way to dispose of the oven.

Selling will be a great option if the oven’s still working. However, finding a buyer who will appreciate your oven in its current condition can be daunting. It can take time, and you will still need to find space in your house before you sell them.

If your cooker is in good condition, post it on Craiglist, eBay, OfferUp, or Facebook Marketplace. Just ensure you have a couple of clear images posted with details that potential buyers should know.

Additionally, if you have more than one item to sell, you can try to host a garage sale. You can also try selling your cooker oven to a repair or used appliance shop for replacement parts.

County Collection

Sometimes, your state might have a county collection program to collect electrical items, which can be a great way to get rid of your old oven. All you need to do is put in a request and wait for the people at the county office to come pick up your kitchen appliance.

County collection is a great option, especially if you want to get rid of a faulty or beyond-repair oven.

Note: If the county department requires you to remove certain parts from your cover oven before giving it out, ensure you hire a qualified technician to handle the task.

Recycle

If no one wants your old oven or you can’t find a charitable organization, you can also try recycling it. Contact your local waste management department and ask them to pick up and recycle your cooker oven.

Be sure to enquire about the charges. Some states will charge for the service, while others will only require you to remove compressors and refrigerants before recycling.

You can also ask your kitchen appliance retailer to recycle your old cooker when purchasing a new one. Some will even haul the oven away for free upon delivering the new appliance.

Have the Appliance Fixed

The first thing you need to do before deciding to dispose of your old cooker oven is to attempt to have it fixed. Although fixing an old oven might not be as good as getting a new one, it will give you time to gather the funds and replace it. Even an old oven can still last for a while with proper maintenance.

Why is Kitchen Appliance Recycling Important?

Recycling your appliances can greatly help the environment

You might be wondering, do I need to recycle my cooker oven? As I mentioned earlier, most modern kitchen appliances today are made of non-biodegradable material that can harm the environment. The best way to ensure that your old cooker oven does not harm the environment is to recycle.

Here are some of the main reasons why you should get rid of your old oven properly:

You Must Comply With the Law

You don’t want to find yourself on the wrong side of the law when getting rid of your old oven. There are several mandatory recycling tools and disposal bans in the U.S. I recommend you visit your area’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery website for detailed laws related to electronic waste disposal.

At least 22 states have banned hazardous electronic waste in their landfills. Some of the states with an active ban include Florida, Massachusetts, California, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and New York.

Recycling Is Good for the Environment

Statistics reveal that over nine million freezers and refrigerators are disposed of every year, which means that the liquid refrigerant in the appliances is released into the atmosphere, significantly contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer.

Recycling kitchen appliances ensure you help reduce global warming potential and save quite a considerable amount of money.

You Can Make a Few Dollars

If your old cooker oven works, you can sell it on eBay or any other online platform. Moreover, if the appliance is bulky, you can sell the electric motors or metal shells as scrap metal. Like gold and silver, recycled commodities such as aluminum, copper, plastic, or silver have value.

Aluminum accounts for 75 percent of recycled material in the U.S. Home appliance accounts for 10 percent of the collection.

Note that taking your cooker oven apart and selling it as scrap metal significantly contributes to the scrap metal’s ability to recycle valuable metals and reduces the need for mining metals used in manufacturing companies.

Getting Rid of an Old Oven Responsibly

Whether you’re looking to donate your old cooker oven to a charitable organization or want to leave it to the junk removal service, the fact is, there is a ton of benefits in recycling the appliance.

Besides, when you dispose of your old stove with a reputable company, you can ensure that your old junk will not be hazardous to the environment.
