Common Microwave Error Codes & How to Solve Them

Microwave error codes

Are you struggling to understand the error code on your microwave?

You’re not alone! I understand how frustrating it can be when your microwave displays an unfamiliar error code and is not working as it should.

But don’t worry. I’m here to help.

Microwave error codes typically indicate issues related to the door, control panel, wiring, control board, steam sensor, or high-voltage circuit. To fix the problem, perform a reset or inspect the internal components.

Warning: When addressing issues related to the high-voltage circuit, you must call a certified technician to ensure your safety. Microwaves contain high-voltage capacitors that store dangerous electrical charge even when the appliance is unplugged or turned off.

Read on to clear your microwave’s error code!

What Your Microwave’s Error Codes Mean

In this section, I’ll guide you through the most common error codes for different microwave brands, including LG, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Samsung, and GE.

Before diving into more complex troubleshooting, try restarting your microwave by unplugging it from the power outlet, waiting for a few minutes, and plugging it back in. More often than not, performing a reset can solve temporary glitches that could be causing the error.

However, if restarting your microwave doesn’t clear the error code, please keep reading. You’ll find different ways to fix it.

Note: To clear some microwave error codes, you’ll need to access and replace certain components. So, having the unit’s model number and owner’s manual handy is crucial.

Common LG Microwave Error Codes

Although LG is one of the best microwave brands out there, understanding its error codes can be a bit tricky.

Don’t worry, though. Here’s what LG microwave error codes mean:

Microwave Error Code MeaningHow to Fix It
DOORIt indicates that the door is not properly closed. When fixing a DOOR error code on LG microwaves, my usual advice is to make sure there’s nothing obstructing the door.
It’s also important to clean the latch with a soft cloth. While you’re at it, look for any visible signs of damage. If the door latch is broken, you’ll need to get a replacement.
Don’t forget to inspect your microwave’s door spring and switch. If necessary, replace them.
LOCThe Control Lock function is turned on. The LOC code doesn’t indicate an issue; it appears when the Control Lock or Child Lock is turned on. This safety feature prevents children from accidentally operating the microwave and getting hurt.
To clear the code, simply press and hold the “Stop/Clear” button for a few seconds.
Keep in mind that the process of turning off the control lock can vary depending on the specific model of your LG microwave. So, please refer to the owner’s manual.
F16, F19There’s an issue that prevents your microwave from heating your food.In my experience, when a microwave isn’t heating, it’s often due to problems with the high-voltage diode, magnetron, and capacitor. These components are responsible for generating microwaves and heating your food.
Please note that you should never attempt DIY repairs on the high-voltage circuit, as it can store a dangerous charge even when unplugged. You must call a certified technician to address the error code and prevent any potential safety hazards.
It’s often more cost-effective to replace the microwave itself.
F11There’s a communication error within your microwave’s electronic system.Performing a reset can solve most communication errors.
However, if the F11 code persists, it indicates an issue with the control board.
Unfortunately, inspecting and replacing the control board can be both expensive and tricky. It’s often more cost-effective to replace the entire unit.

Understanding Kitchen Aid and Whirlpool Error Codes

Whirlpool and Kitchen Aid microwaves are known for their durability. Unfortunately, even the most reliable brands can display error codes.

Note: Both brands share the same error codes because Whirlpool owns KitchenAid.

Let’s see what their error codes mean:

Microwave Error Code MeaningHow to Fix It
Err7, SEThere’s an issue with the keypad.Perform a reset to solve any communication error.
However, if the error persists, it’s possible that dust, gunk, and debris are building up in the buttons and interfering with their functionality.
To fix the Err7 code, clean your microwave’s buttons using a damp towel with water.
You can also remove the control panel’s external interface (where the buttons are) and look for any loose connections.
If securing the connections doesn’t solve the issue, the control panel is probably faulty and needs to be replaced.
DOOR, Starts with F5, 9d11The door is not properly closed, preventing your microwave’s operation.Remove any obstructions from the door and inspect the latch. If it’s broken or damaged, replace it with a new one.
If the error code persists, check the door spring. If it’s old, dirty, or broken, it can prevent your door from closing.
From what I’ve seen, a faulty door sensor can also trigger the error code, as it will fail to signal the control board to start the microwaving process. If the sensor malfunctions, get a replacement.
Keep in mind that if you’re uncomfortable replacing the door components yourself, it’s best to call a professional.
Flashing “:”,”00″, or PFThere has been a power interruption. To clear the PF or “:” error code, simply press the “Cancel/Off” key and reset the clock.
To set your clock, press the “clock” or “time” button until your microwave starts flashing with all zeros. Then, enter the correct time and press the “Okay” or “Start” button.
Keep in mind that the process of setting your clock can vary depending on the specific model you own. Please refer to the owner’s manual for detailed instructions.
F1E1, F1E4There’s a problem with the control board that prevents your microwave from executing the requested function. Reset your microwave to clear the error code. If it persists, there’s probably an issue with the wiring or control board. In such cases, I recommend calling a professional, as accessing the internal parts of your microwave can be tricky.
Just keep in mind that it’s usually more cost-effective to replace the entire appliance.

C-70, C-71, C-72, E-71, E-72It indicates that there’s a problem with the steam sensor. Some modern microwaves have a steam sensor that detects the amount of moisture in the food and adjusts the cooking time accordingly.
To solve the error code, access the steam sensor and wipe it gently with a soft cloth. If you notice any signs of damage or if the code persists, you’ll need to replace the steam sensor.
Keep in mind that accessing the steam sensor can be a bit challenging, especially if you have an over-the-range microwave. So if you feel uncomfortable, it’s best to call a professional.
C-20,C-21,C-22,E-21Your microwave is overheating and shutting itself down.If your microwave is overheating, unplug it and let it cool down. Then, make sure there’s at least 4 inches of space behind and on the sides of your microwave.
If the error code persists, there’s probably an issue with the high-voltage section. In such cases, you must call a professional, as these components can retain a lethal electric charge even when the unit is unplugged.
C-d0, C-d1, C-d2, E-47There’s an issue with your microwave’s door.Unplug your microwave from the power outlet and clean the door latch and spring. Look for any visible signs of damage. If the latch or spring is broken or worn out, you’ll need to get a replacement.
If the error code persists, test the door switch with a multimeter. If the switch doesn’t have continuity, replace it with a new one.
