Save Money & The Planet: Switch to LED Lighting!

If your electricity bill fills you with dread each month, the culprit could be hiding in plain site!

Don’t get me wrong, older style bulbs do look great with a more orange glow to them. I personally hung onto them for too long, thinking LED lights were always too bright. Thankfully, I’ve since been proven very wrong.

In this quick blog, I hope to convince you to join me in the switch to all LED lights in your home. They’re cheaper, they last longer, need less maintenance, and are extremely durable. Did I mention they’re cheaper?

I’ve run a quick breakdown comparing LED lights to fluorescent and incandescent styles. In addition to being easier to type, LED lights now come in any color and power level you can ask for. Just make sure you buy your LED lights from a good source to avoid those glaring hospital-white bulbs.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

LED bulbs consume significantly less energy than their incandescent and fluorescent counterparts. On average, an LED bulb uses about 75% less energy than an incandescent bulb and about 40% less than a fluorescent bulb. To put this into perspective, a typical 60-watt incandescent bulb can be replaced with a 10-watt LED bulb to produce the same amount of light.

Annual Savings Calculation

Let’s break down the potential savings for a household that switches all its bulbs to LEDs. Consider the following assumptions:

• The average household has about 40 light bulbs.
• Each bulb is used for approximately 3 hours per day.
• The cost of electricity is \$0.13 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Incandescent Bulbs:

• Power consumption per bulb: 60 watts
• Annual energy usage per bulb: 60 watts * 3 hours/day * 365 days/year = 65.7 kWh
• Annual cost per bulb: 65.7 kWh * \$0.13/kWh = \$8.54
• Total annual cost for 40 bulbs: 40 bulbs * \$8.54 = \$341.60

LED Bulbs:

Power consumption per bulb: 10 watts
Annual energy usage per bulb: 10 watts * 3 hours/day * 365 days/year = 10.95 kWh
Annual cost per bulb: 10.95 kWh * \$0.13/kWh = \$1.42
Total annual cost for 40 bulbs: 40 bulbs * \$1.42 = \$56.80

Total Annual Savings

By switching to LED bulbs, the total annual energy cost for lighting would be \$56.80 compared to \$341.60 with incandescent bulbs. Therefore, the total savings per year for an average household would be:

\$341.60 – \$56.80 = \$284.80

This calculation demonstrates that an average household can save approximately \$285 per year by switching to LED lighting.

Versatility of LED Lights

One of the remarkable advantages of LED lighting is its versatility. LEDs come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. This adaptability allows homeowners to use LEDs not just for basic lighting needs but also for decorative and accent purposes.

LED Strips

LED strip lights are one of my favorite ways to light my home. They’re an excellent example of the versatility of LED lighting. These flexible strips can be installed almost anywhere, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits. Here are some ways LED strips can be used to enhance the modern feel of a home:

• Under Cabinet Lighting: LED strips installed under kitchen cabinets provide bright, efficient task lighting and add a sleek, modern touch to the kitchen.
• Accent Lighting: Placing LED strips along the edges of ceilings, walls, or furniture creates a subtle yet striking accent lighting effect, perfect for highlighting architectural features or creating a cozy ambiance.
• Backlighting for TVs and Monitors: LED strips behind televisions and computer monitors reduce eye strain and add a stylish backlighting effect, enhancing the viewing experience.
• Outdoor Lighting: Waterproof LED strips can be used to illuminate outdoor spaces such as patios, decks, and garden pathways, adding safety and aesthetic appeal to outdoor areas.
• Decorative Elements: LED strips can be creatively used in various home décor projects, from lighting up shelves and bookcases to creating artistic light installations on walls.

Conclusion

I hope this quick article has convinced you to make the switch to LED lights!

The initial investment in LED bulbs is offset by substantial energy savings and reduced replacement costs. By making the switch, you can save around \$285 annually on your electricity bill while contributing to a more sustainable environment.

Additionally, the versatility of LED lights, particularly LED strips, allows you to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home, giving it a modern and stylish feel.
