So you’ve invested in an electric griddle and you’re looking for the best way to clean it? I (try!) to make sure that all of my appliances are always kept clean, so in this guide I’ve covered the best way to get an electric griddle expertly cleaned.
A clean appliance not only looks much better, but doing it properly will keep your appliance working longer and save you time in the future.
What we’ll need
As with any cleaning task, patience is key. Take your time in order to prevent damaging the appliance. Otherwise you may be on the market for a new griddle. Be gentle with your griddle whilst cleaning to get the best possible outcome.

- Heat Resistant Gloves
- Flat Headed Spatula
Typically you’re going to want to use warm water and a damp cloth. Keep in mind that if you’re going to use any heavy-duty cleaning products that you check your griddles guide-lines to prevent any damage being caused by the products. I personally like to stick with traditional methods to avoid this.
Lets get to cleaning
It’s safe to say we all share an equal hatred for grease – it stays no matter how much you clean.
A good technique to loosen grease is to actually turn on your griddle and scrape it off with a spatula. This isn’t the most thorough method, but it’s a great way to remove grease in bulk so we can polish the griddle off with traditional methods afterwards.
If you’re able to, put your griddle on a low heat and watch as the grease starts to heat up. Once the griddle has heated the grease, we take our spatula (make sure it’s flat headed to avoid scratching) and slowly scrape it off. You should find it comes off much easier. Just make sure to keep your distance from griddles plate when doing so, we try to avoid this by using a spatula so we’re far away from while the griddle is hot, but heat resistant gloves are strongly recommended.
Once you’ve removed the excess grease, turn the griddle off and allow it to cool. Don’t worry if there’s still some grease left, as we’ll be dealing with this in our next step.
Remember we’re dealing with an electrical appliance. So before we get started ensure that the griddle is unplugged and powered down, this will ensure we don’t cause damage to the griddle (or you for that matter) and we can proceed in a safe manner.
The Griddle Itself
First and foremost, make sure you’re using a cloth with no rugged sides. If you’re using a sponge, make sure to use the side not for scrubbing, or you could damage the non-stick coating.
Dip your cloth/sponge in warm water and slowly clean off any remaining grease. This shouldn’t take long, but if your griddle has been sitting with the dirt for a long period of time it can become a longer and more difficult task to actually clean it. Once your griddle has enough cleaning solution on it, leave it to soak up the grease for 30 minutes to an hour.
Come back to the satisfaction of easily wiping off any leftover grease that remains. Just remember to wipe up all excess waster to avoid the appearance of marks afterwards.
The Drip Tray
To save time, it’s important to note if the dip-tray is dishwasher friendly. If it is, great – just make sure to double check for any special instructions in the manual, and make sure it’s securely in place to prevent it coming loose.
If you’re doing it by hand in a basin, simply fill it with warm soapy water and leave it to soak for 20 minutes. Once the grease has broken off, you can proceed to give it an easy wash over with a cloth.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who hates air marks on appliances I’ve just cleaned!
So lets go one step further by adding a “finish”.
Grab your cloth and soak it up with some cold water. Gently go over the surface of the griddle, drain the cloth and repeat this 3-4 times. You should find that after this process your griddle looks brand new! If you want to go even further, do the same for your dip tray.
Preventing build up of grease
One of the most important things for the build-up of grease is the type of surface your griddle is using. Typically most griddles come with a non-stick surface, but if yours doesn’t you’ll probably spend more time cleaning then actually cooking with it.
If you’re wanting to invest in a new griddle, make sure to grab one with a non-stick surface.
We all know that once we’re done cooking, cleaning can be a boring, tedious task and we may leave it for later. But in reality you’ll be saving yourself so much-more time by simply cleaning the drip tray/griddle surface straight after you’re done cooking. The remaining grease / food will be loose and so easy to clean.
So really, the major tip on this list is to make sure you clean your griddle after-use. This also reduces the chance of damage while cleaning it – and saves you a ton of time, too.
